Oh yeah, those blood test results...
I'm not infected with anything. My sugar is just a bit over the top end of the normal range, despite having fasted since 6PM the night before my blood was drawn. My cholesterol number was 221, which is apparently not good.

The employee health nurse told me that I was pre-diabetic and she wanted me to cut out the sugars and simple carbohydrates such as foods derived from white rice and white flour and potatoes. "You're basicly eating glue," she explained. She kept writing down the things I couldn't eat, right there on the lab results.

Me: "Whoah, you're going to run out of room there if you keep writing down things I like to eat!"

Nurse Ratchet: "Oh, that's okay. I can keep going on the back side of the page."

She wants me to eat lean meats and green leafy vegetables. I happen to like salmon and tuna and meat in general, lean or not, and I have developed quite a taste for spinach, and have always liked asparagus and brocolli. So there's that.

Everybody on Dad's side of the family died of heart disease, Dad included. Dana told me that the diet the nurse described sounded like the South Beach diet, which I always assumed was some kind of Atkins-esque fad diet. On the other hand, I think my buddy [info]makovette slimmed WAY the hell down on it. It turns out that the so called "South Beach diet" is just eating low fat proteins and non-junk carbs. It was invented by a cardiologist as a heart healthy diet, not as a weight loss diet.

Anyway, I've felt like crap since I stopped exercising and been eating junk while studying for the bar. I dont' see any reason why I can't at least eat better.

In other news, Mom's boyfriend is coming next weekend, to stay for the next two weeks. Guess I'll hole up in my room.

I can not WAIT until I finish the Bar and find a place of my own, whether it's the long distance commute from The Lair or some place else.

I've been doing basically that diet, the ADA/South Beach/no simple carbs or sugar diet since December, and I've lost about 80 pounds so far.
I can give you lots of help and support, but the most important thing I can tell you is this: Don't try to kick sugar before you finish the bar exam.
Srsly. There's a couple weeks of intense bitchyness and moodswings etc. that you don't need to deal with right now.
So go to Subway instead of KFC, and start eating better. But don't try to go cold-turkey on the sugar and carbs before you sit the bar exam.

Whoah... 80 pounds since December??? Well, I guess 2 pounds and change a week isn't unrealistic at all, but to hear of someone keeping that level of weight loss up for 7 months... wow.

I'll keep the Cokes, even though they're possible the worst for me. Maybe I can scale 'em back a little though. I was drinking a lot of water for a while there.

Keep in mind that I was at 450# at the start of that 80-pound weight loss. It's not that dramatic when you see it as a fraction of the total :)
Dude, switch to iced tea sweetened with Splenda. 2/3 cup of the loose "baking" Splenda (or generic) per gallon of tea is good, but you might want to start with 1 cup, until your tastebuds adjust.
Sodas are terrible for you, and it's not just the sugar content.

because of the Crohn's, I had to do away with sodas...

...pre-diabetic is some cause for concern, but a sudden change in diet can be disruptive. Ease into it gradually. No sudden sweeping changes. And eating brown rice is better for you. At least they did not prescribe Metformin for you.

Like above.. don't change anything until after the bar.

Also... if you are going to do sugar, do REAL sugar not corn syrup. It gets metabolized differently. There's also agave syrup .. anyway, go to Rainbow coop and become familiar with their bulk food section. You'll be surprised at how delicious simple food can be.

For the cholesterol- simple barley salad. Boil barley with low salt bouillon and ad veg like you would a pasta salad.
For quick/cheap protein do a kidney/garbanzo bean salad/onion/lemon juice/olive oil/salt.

I struggle with diet but for different reasons. Mine is basically portion control as opposed to what I eat. With that being said, I can offer support and advice on food/nutrition/etc. Hell, out here we are growing 50 odd tomato plants and cucumbers/beans/ herbs etc. I'm all about cheap healthy eats and can help guide you to do it mississippi style:)

BUT BUT BUT.. .I digress. GO to http://www.whfoods.com/ and become more acquainted with these ingredients.

Robin,

It's not a diet; it's a way of life. Sounds like she just wants you to eat clean - lean protein (fish and chicken), complex carbs such as fruits and vegetables, no simple carbs such as Fruit Loops etc., nuts, wheat and multigrain products, and try to avoid process foods.

By the way, sweetners such as Splenda only make you crave sugar. Use brown suger or sucanat(found at Rainbow) instead of artificial sweetners or refined sugar.
